Chapter Fifteen
Her tires squelched in the loose gravel of the bed-and-breakfastâs back driveway as Rowena threw the car into park and shoved open the door. She slammed it behind her as she ran towards the back door, wrenching the screen door open, which protested loudly as she shouldered into the kitchen, yelling for her dad, fearing the worst.
The sight of the kitchen stopped Rowena in her tracks. Flour covered everything. Whatever was on the stove smelled as if it were burning, and there were white paw prints, which she assumed were Freyaâs, leading into the lower floor of the bed-and-breakfast.
âDad?â Rowena asked, craning her neck to look farther into the house. She stepped carefully over the flour trail and turned off the stove, scrunching her nose at the bitter smell of what looked to have been broccoli and carrots.
âYour cat is a menace,â Christopher declared as he came down the stairs, rubbing at his eyes. He was covered in flour, and rubbing his eyes only added white streaks across his face. âBut... I may owe her a jar of kimchi.â
âWhat on earth happened?â Rowena asked, forcing herself not to laugh at her dadâs exasperated expression. She bit her lips tightly when he glared at her.
He stormed over to the closet and pulled out a broom, shoving it into her hands. Then he stomped to the stove. He made a disgusted sound before he dumped the charred contents in the trash bin.
âSomeone was sneaking around again.â Christopher dropped the skillet into the sink and reached for the scrubber. Rowena startled at his words but began sweeping when he glared at her. âYour blasted cat chased him off, but in the process, managed to knock over the newly opened twenty-five-pound bag of flour and the small bookshelf in the front foyer.â
âYou saw who it was?â she asked, leaning her weight on the broom as she watched her dad. He shook his head even as he continued washing. He had always found comfort in domestic tasks. Her mom had said it was one of the reasons she fell in love with him.
âNo, but Iâve already called the police about it,â he grumbled, as if it was a personal failing that he didnât capture the prowler.
She huffed and finished helping her dad clean the kitchen. Sheâd asked where Freya was, and he grumbled that Freya had run into the woods after the person who escaped. Without comment, she went to the back door, snagging the cordless phone on the way and dialed the number for the local pizza place to put in an order. She knew her dad was stressed, both with the ongoing murder investigation and the new guests checking in tomorrow. She opened the door and spotted her familiar waiting primly at the tree line, grooming the flour out of her fur.
âCome on, you,â she said, gesturing for Freya to rejoin her inside.
âDid you order enough for Evelyn? She mentioned you asked her to come by,â Christopher said in passing as he walked into the front room and started righting the shelves.
